just jack - all night cinema

just jack's new album 'all night cinema' was released on monday. it's been awhile since we last heard anything from jack, so it's been quite a nice surprise to see him come back with some very strong material. the album starts with the orchestral, ad-mans wet dream of a track 'embers'. which sets the tone, for the rest of the album as a much more polished, produced and mainstream pop affair compared to the previous album 'overtones'. album highlights have to be 'the day i died', 'doctor doctor' and 'goth in a disco'. the last one mainly just because of it's slightly left-field subject matter :/. anyway you can hear the entire album right now on spotify and it's also available to download from itunes, all the links are below, as well as a very cool acoustic version of 'the day i died'. let me know what you think in the usual ways.

is it winter in alaska ?

the answer is yes, as i write it's -32c. just a tad bit nippy (better put a scarf on it's cold out). anyway forget about alaska and focus your attention on berlin, which is home to the band/collective/solo artist alaska in winter. alaska in winter are unique in that they can be both upbeat and downbeat all in one track. their latest album dance party in the balkans takes you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions, with swirling, haunting lyrics and great use of brass mainly the trumpet which gives you a sense of been in a funeral procession. there is even an electro edge in places. granted some people would say that it lacks a definite style or even flow but that adds to the albums haunting, lingering sound it doesn't play from beginning to end it swirls around you and sucks you in.
